Health and the 24/7 market

By the end of this lesson you can

  • Explain why chronic restriction degrades performance without producing a matching sense of impairment
  • Compute the sleep deficit that accumulates across an ordinary fortnight
  • Define a session in a market that never closes, and state what covers the rest
  • Treat sleep as a hard constraint rather than as a variable the plan can borrow from

This lesson opens with The cumulative cost of additional wakefulness, published 2003.

What happened
Hans Van Dongen, Greg Maislin, Janet Mullington and David Dinges published a controlled study in the journal Sleep in 2003. Participants were randomized to 4, 6 or 8 hours of time in bed per night and held there for 14 consecutive days, with a separate arm undergoing three nights of total sleep deprivation, and with three baseline days before and three recovery days after. Neurobehavioural performance in the restricted groups degraded cumulatively across the fourteen days rather than stabilising. The finding that gives the study its standing is the dissociation: subjects in the chronically restricted conditions reported only slight increases in subjective sleepiness while their measured performance continued to decline.
The decision point
The deficit accumulated and the awareness of it did not. That is the same structure as every control failure in this level: a degradation that the degraded party cannot assess, which per R403-06 is precisely the case in which a rule has to replace a judgment. A market that trades continuously offers no external boundary, so the boundary is a decision, and the person making it nightly is the person the study describes.

What you will be able to answer

  • What was the dissociation?
  • How much deficit accumulates?
  • What fraction of the week is a session?
  • So what covers the rest?

Orientation and Year One are open: anyone can read them without an account. From Year Two onward the lessons are for enrolled learners, because progress through the later years only means anything if it is tracked against a record.

It is free. We do not sell the list and there is nothing to buy at the end of it.

Individual sleep requirements vary and the eight hour figure used in part one is a common reference rather than a universal need. The study's finding concerns the dose-response relationship and the dissociation between measured and perceived impairment, both of which hold regardless of where any individual's requirement sits. Substitute your own figure in the arithmetic.

This lesson makes no clinical claims and is not health advice. It uses one controlled study to establish that a specific degradation is not self-assessable, which is a claim about measurement rather than about medicine. Anybody with a sleep disorder or a health concern should speak to a clinician rather than to a curriculum.

S201-05 owns continuous markets as a market structure property. R404-03 owns the availability of exits. This lesson owns the operator's boundary and why it must be imposed. Keep the splits.
