Self-sovereign distribution, end to end
By the end of this lesson you can
- →Enumerate the six layers between a creator's work and their revenue
- →Identify which layers can be owned outright and which cannot be
- →Apply the disappearance test to a distribution stack rather than a holding
- →Price the cost of removing a dependency against the revenue it carries
Junior · enrolled learners
This lesson opens with OnlyFans, 19 to 25 August 2021.
- What happened
- On 19 August 2021 OnlyFans announced that it would prohibit sexually explicit content from 1 October, attributing the decision to pressure from banking partners and payment processors. The announcement gave creators whose entire income ran through the platform roughly six weeks of notice on a change none of them had been consulted about. On 25 August, six days later, the company suspended the policy, stating that the change was no longer required because it had secured assurances from its banking partners, without detailing what those assurances were.
- The decision point
- Read both halves together, because the reversal is as instructive as the ban. The terms of these creators' businesses were set by parties two steps removed from them, being banks and processors with whom they had no relationship and no standing, and were then unset by the same chain within a week. At no point did any decision belong to the people whose income it determined. The exposure was never the platform's judgment. It was the number of intermediaries between the work and the money.
What you will be able to answer
- →What are the six layers of a distribution stack?
- →Which two layers resist ownership?
- →What did the reversal demonstrate?
- →How do you price removing a dependency?
Orientation and Year One are open: anyone can read them without an account. From Year Two onward the lessons are for enrolled learners, because progress through the later years only means anything if it is tracked against a record.
It is free. We do not sell the list and there is nothing to buy at the end of it.

Contested
This lesson makes no argument about the content policy itself, which is a separate question on which this Academy takes no position. The mechanism being taught is that the decision was made and reversed by parties with no relationship to the affected creators, which would be equally true of any policy on any subject.
The payment layer analysis is deliberately unfavorable to on-chain rails. Per P7 they remove real intermediaries and they impose a real cost in audience reach, and a lesson that omitted the second would be advocacy rather than instruction.
