This lesson opens with Blankos Block Party and Champions Tactics.
- What happened
- Blankos Block Party sold limited-run in-game items as tokens, with some players spending $300 or more. In December 2023 the studio shut the PC version down entirely with less than a week's notice, pivoting to a mobile product that had not appeared, and the items' value fell accordingly. Ubisoft's Champions Tactics launched in 2024 with each in-game character also existing as a token. In May 2026 Ubisoft removed the blockchain systems from the game, ending wallet integration and converting the token-based assets into conventional in-game items, and it subsequently announced that the servers would be taken offline permanently at the end of October 2026. Comparable closures include Midnight Society's Deadrop, which had sold access passes on Polygon before shutting in January 2025, and Forgotten Runiverse, which paused operations less than a year after launch.
- The decision point
- Read the Champions Tactics sequence as three separate removals, none of which required a holder's consent. The publisher first removed the token property, converting on-chain assets into ordinary game items. Then it removed the game. At no point did the ledger fail, and at no point did holding the entry prevent either step, because what the entry granted was access to a service that one company operated and could stop operating.
