The honest NFT retrospective

By the end of this lesson you can

  • State what the 2021 to 2023 cycle established and what it did not
  • Distinguish a failure of the technology from a failure of what was built on it
  • Compute the distribution of outcomes across a full population rather than the visible tail
  • Identify which claims from that period survived scrutiny

This lesson opens with The dappGambl survey, September 2023.

What happened
A study published in September 2023 by dappGambl, using data from NFT Scan and CoinMarketCap, examined 73,257 collections and found that 69,795 of them, slightly over 95 percent, had a market capitalization of zero ether. The authors estimated that roughly 23 million people held assets in that category. Within the surveyed population, 79 percent of collections remained entirely unsold, fewer than 1 percent exceeded $6,000 in value, and 41 percent were priced between $5 and $10.
The decision point
The figure that matters is not 95 percent, it is the denominator. Almost every account of this period, favorable or critical, was written about the visible tail: the collections with names, prices and coverage. The survey counted the whole population, and per S203-04 the difference between a sample of the observed and a census of the issued is the entire distance between the story and the outcome. Nothing in the technology failed to work. What failed was a belief about how a population of over seventy thousand speculative issuances would be distributed.

What you will be able to answer

  • What did the population survey find?
  • Why is the denominator the important number?
  • What actually failed in that cycle?
  • Which claims survived?

Orientation and Year One are open: anyone can read them without an account. From Year Two onward the lessons are for enrolled learners, because progress through the later years only means anything if it is tracked against a record.

It is free. We do not sell the list and there is nothing to buy at the end of it.

Contested

The dappGambl methodology has been criticized, principally for treating a zero recorded market cap as equivalent to worthlessness when a collection may simply be illiquid or held rather than traded. Marked medium confidence. The direction is not seriously disputed by any competing survey, and the lesson uses the distribution shape rather than the headline percentage.

This Academy uses DOT rather than NFT in its own copy, per the house style. The term NFT appears in this course where the subject is the historical period and the industry's own vocabulary, which is what J307-02 exists to unpick.
