Improving Students' Learning With Effective Learning Techniques, 2013
John Dunlosky, Katherine Rawson, Elizabeth Marsh, Mitchell Nathan and Daniel Willingham reviewed ten learning techniques for Psychological Science in the Public Interest in January 2013, limited to techniques students could use without assistance, some included because students report using them frequently, and rated each on whether its benefits generalized across learning conditions, students, materials and criterion tasks. Five were rated low utility: summarization, highlighting, the keyword mnemonic, imagery for text learning and rereading. Rereading and highlighting are the ones most students report using; they do not consistently boost performance, and highlighting may hurt on higher-level tasks that require inference.
